NATURE OF WORK
Student visitor Information Counsellors assist visitors by providing information and assisting them with any inquiries that they may have. Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direction of the supervisor/ manager assigned to the worksite.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May provide direction or assistance to other workers and/or volunteers and/or contract individuals on occasion.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Delivers exceptional visitor experiences of the facility, City and the region.
- Responds to high volume of public inquires via phone, email, social media and in person and provides complete and accurate information.
- Greets all customers, facility users and community members with up-to-date information about current events, programs and activities in town and the area of interest to visitors. E.g. road reports, tourist alerts, Weather etc.
- Assists visitors and customers in obtaining information regarding Fort St. John and the Peace River and/or other geographical areas; maintains knowledge of community, regional and provincial events, program, services, facilities and other information.
- Performs a variety of routine clerical duties including answering the phone, assisting customers, stocking shelves, filing, data entry, generating reports, statistical record keeping and departmental procedures are adhered to.
- Performs cashier duties as required, including processing transactions; cash, debit, credit, and other forms of payment using reservation software and point-of-sale systems.
- Accurately reconciles daily cash and transactions at the beginning and end of shifts and prepares deposits.
- Promotes tourism through mobile/ pop up visitor centers at events or in-community.
- Conducts community engagement through roaming ambassadors, street teams, campground or attraction visits.
- Works with Communications staff to provides digital content for media outreach and advertising for the visitor center for the calendar year.
- Responsible for organizing a familiarization tour with local attractions for tourism operators.
- Distribute brochures and advertisements.
- Assists with the organization with the implementation or support of special events at the Visitor Information Centre.
- Wear a clean and well-maintain uniform and name tag while on shift.
- Ensures that working areas are kept tidy; performs basic janitorial duties.
- Provides first aid to staff and patrons.
- Reports immediately, to the designated supervisor, all incidents or injuries and activates emergency procedures as required; detects and reports observed hazardous conditions, practices and behaviours in the workplace.
- Contributes to a positive work environment by modelling a respectful workplace, as per City policy.
- Takes reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves, and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Properly wears protective clothing, devices, and equipment provided, and ensures hazards are immediately reported to Supervisors.
- Complies with the City of Fort St. John’s Occupational Health and Safety program, and all applicable policies and procedures.
- Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL
- Enrolled in Grade 11 or higher-level education.
- Must be a student returning to school in the fall at a secondary or post-secondary level, enrolled in Tourism program an asset.
- First Aid (Level 1) Certification
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Previous experience in customer service role.
- Knowledge of the community and local attractions.
- The successful candidate must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check- Vulnerable Sector.
- Position is in part Funded by Canada Summer Jobs that requires the applicant to be between the age of 15-30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USE
Computers, printers, photocopiers, telephones, email and other office and electronic equipment. Light janitorial Equipment. City Vehicle. Activity-related to mobile/ pop up visitors center equipment such as Pop-up tent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position may entail lifting, climbing, walking, standing for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, looking at a computer for long periods of time, and lifting and/or moving items that can weigh up to 25 lbs.
