NATURE OF WORK
The Crime Analyst is responsible for collecting, evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting crime and intelligence data to support criminal investigations, enforcement priorities, operational planning, and strategic initiatives. This position develops analytical products such as crime trend reports, risk assessments, offender profiles, and visualizations to inform police operations and public safety decision-making. The Crime Analyst works independently and collaboratively with RCMP members, supervisors, partner agencies, and City staff to identify patterns, forecast trends, and support resource deployment.
This is a full-time position and may require flexible or irregular hours to meet operational needs, including response to emergent investigative priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collects, compiles, and analyzes data from police and external sources (e.g., PRIME, CPIC, JUSTIN, CORNET) to support investigative, tactical, and strategic priorities.
- Identifies crime patterns, trends, series, hotspots, repeat locations/offenders, and risk factors affecting community safety.
- Prepares a range of analytical products, including briefing notes, link analysis, crime maps, forecasts, threat assessments, and project evaluations.
- Provides direct analytical support to investigators, including assistance with timeline development, target profiling, and investigative recommendations.
- Supports strategic planning, crime reduction initiatives, and intelligence-led policing approaches aligned with detachment and community priorities.
- Delivers presentations and briefings to RCMP members, managers, and partners to inform operational decisions.
- Maintains and develops data visualizations, dashboards, and GIS-based maps to enhance situational awareness.
- Monitors and evaluates enforcement outcomes and refines analytical approaches based on results and feedback.
- Ensures compliance with RCMP data integrity, disclosure, and security standards, including FOIPPA.
- Assists in identifying files for referral to provincial and federal programs such as Civil Forfeiture.
- Contributes to a positive work environment by modelling a respectful workplace, as per City policy.
- Takes reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves, and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Properly wears protective clothing, devices, and equipment provided, and ensures hazards are immediately reported to Supervisors.
- Complies with the City of Fort St. John’s Occupational Health and Safety program, and all applicable policies and procedures.

REQUIRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & REGISTRATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in criminology, social science, statistics, geography, economics, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience in crime or intelligence analysis in a police or law enforcement environment.
· Experience working with police or law enforcement information systems.
· Demonstrated proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as ArcGIS, IBM i2 Analyst’s Notebook, Tableau, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Understanding of Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS), and crime coding standards.
· Strong analytical, research, and report-writing skills with the ability to interpret complex quantitative and qualitative data.
· Ability to handle sensitive and graphic material with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· High degree of independence, critical thinking, and judgment.
· RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance – Top Security is required and must be maintained.
· Completion of relevant analytical or investigative training (e.g., EDCAS Analyst certification) is an asset.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Computers, police data systems, GIS software, link analysis tools, printers, telephones, and other related office equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position may entail lifting, climbing, walking, standing for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, looking at a computer for long periods of time, and lifting and/or moving items that can weigh up to 25 lbs.
