NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The Groundskeeper performs various skilled horticultural tasks, including assisting with the design, development, construction and maintenance of garden beds and landscaped areas across the City. Receiving guidance from the Urban Landscape Coordinator, the Groundskeeper will plan, organize, direct and participate in the work of staff engaged in various urban landscape, horticulture and park-related tasks. The position will bring expertise in various maintenance of floral and natural planted areas, lawns, trees and park amenities, utilizing techniques and practices consistent with industry standards. In the off-season, the Groundskeeper will plan mowing schedules and flower bed design, perform maintenance of plant equipment, as well as snow/ice control and maintenance of outdoor recreational sites.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor(s).
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides direction and assistance to auxiliary workers and/or other assigned employees.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains accurate records of daily activities and prepares reports on projects for current or future years as directed or required.
- Assists in the planning and design of planting beds and landscape areas as directed.
- Applies herbicides, fertilizers, and pesticides and ensures their safe and proper use.
- Assists with the development of quotes for related areas of responsibility.
- Assists in the planning and maintenance of the city’s irrigation system.
- Performs regular departmental inspections of parks, playgrounds and facilities, including inspections for public safety and removal of obstacles and safety hazards.
- Installs and removes city banners and hanging baskets, clearing brush and garbage from roadways, boulevards, parks and city facilities.
- Assits with collecting garbage from grounds and containers, cleaning and replenishing supplies in outdoor washrooms, including minor building maintenance and repairs.
- Assists with erecting and maintaining signs, sweeping sidewalks and streets, snow removal, sanding and salting sidewalks, outdoor ice maintenance, special event preparation and clean up.
- Operates a variety of light and heavy-duty equipment of various sizes and weights, including attachments.
- Performs traffic control and planning where needed.
- Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
- Contributes to a positive work environment by modelling a respectful workplace, as per City policy.
- Takes reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves, and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Properly wears protective clothing, devises and equipment provided, and ensures hazards are immediately reported to Supervisors. Complies with the City of Fort St. John’s Occupational Health and Safety program, and all applicable policies and procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & REGISTRATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY & SKILLS:
- Completion of Grade 12 education, or equivalent
- Post-secondary education in horticulture, or equivalent (min one-year program)
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. Valid Traffic Control Person Certificate
- Valid Pesticide Applicators License
- Valid Chainsaw Safety Certificate
- Valid Playground Safety Inspection Certificate
- Minimum of one year of full-time experience performing parks/grounds maintenance and horticultural work
- Demonstrated competency with basic Microsoft Office products
- Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities
- Ability to plan and maintain appropriate plantings, trees and sod for sustainable growth
- Demonstrated skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 kg
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
- Ability to demonstrate exceptional communication and customer services skills as necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to follow instructions independently
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
GENERAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
- Utility vehicles such as light trucks, trailer towing, and man-lifts
- Chainsaws, tillers, pneumatic hammers, cutters and compactors, lawn mowers, wheeled tractors, pumps and similar gas, diesel, electric or air powered tools
- Janitorial equipment
- General hand tools such as post-pounders, saws, pruning shears, drills, hammers, shovels, rakes, etc.
