About the Opportunity

The City of Fort St John is looking for two Aquatic Supervisors to join their team in Fort St John, British Columbia. One opportunity is a permanent, full-time position, and the second is a maternity leave coverage role running until February 2027. These roles follow a 10-hour shift schedule (4 days on, 3 days off), with some flexibility required for weekend and afternoon shifts. Non-day shifts receive an additional $1.10/hour premium.

In these dynamic leadership roles, you will report to the Aquatics Manager and work closely with the Aquatics Programmer to ensure the safe, efficient, and engaging operation of the City's aquatic programs and facility. These are a hands-on positions combining supervisory duties, program coordination, and direct aquatics instruction, with approximately equal time spent between office responsibilities and pool deck leadership.

Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising, mentoring, and supporting a diverse team of full-time, part-time, and auxiliary aquatic staff
  • Assisting with staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and daily task delegation
  • Leading and participating in aquatic instruction, lifeguarding, and aqua fitness programs as needed
  • Coordinating and supporting aquatic program delivery, special events, and swim club activities
  • Organizing and delivering aquatic training programs, safety orientations, and certification courses
  • Ensuring safe facility operations and enforcing WorkSafe and legislative safety requirements
  • Monitoring facility conditions and delegating custodial duties to meet operational standards
  • Responding to incidents, reviewing reports, and recommending safety improvements
  • Preparing attendance reports, operational logs, and program statistics
  • Maintaining accurate administrative records and supporting budget management
  • Contributing to a positive, respectful workplace culture aligned with City policies
  • Participating in departmental committees and broader recreation initiatives as required

About You

To qualify, you will need a diploma in recreation, physical education, or a related field and current aquatic instructor and lifeguard certifications. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a related environment with supervisory and program leadership responsibilities will also be essential. You will also have:

  • Current Lifesaving Instructor certification (Trainer certification considered an asset and can be obtained on the job)
  • Current National Lifeguard certification
  • Lifesaving Swim for Life Instructor Trainer and current Lifesaving Instructor
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C and First Aid Instructor certification
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience including scheduling, coaching, and performance support

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • National Lifeguard Instructor certification
  • AquaFit/Fitness Theory certification
  • Pool Operators II (or willingness to obtain)
  • Management skills for Supervisors Certificate, or equivalent course
  • Experience working in a unionized environment
  • Strong administrative and reporting skills
  • Proven ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate aquatic programming
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and program scheduling systems
