About the Opportunity

The City of Fort St. John is looking for a full-time Parks Technician: Turf and Irrigation to join our team in Fort St. John, British Columbia

In this role, you will report to the Parks Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the City’s sports fields and irrigation systems. You will apply your expertise in turf management and irrigation to ensure the safety, quality, and playability of parks and green spaces across the municipality.

Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining and repairing sports fields, turf, and park amenities using industry best practices
  • Inspecting and monitoring turf and infields to identify and address deficiencies
  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting irrigation systems
  • Adjusting irrigation schedules and assisting with water usage forecasting
  • Overseeing and training staff, contractors, and seasonal workers
  • Coordinating with Recreation to support field usage and scheduling
  • Assisting in preparing budgets and seasonal turf management plans
  • Supporting snow and ice control during off-season months
  • Responding to public inquiries and complaints professionally
  • Contributing to the development of safe work procedures and safety documentation
  • Performing or coordinating routine equipment maintenance
  • Promoting a respectful, safe, and inclusive workplace

About You

To qualify, you will need a degree or diploma in Horticulture, Turf Management, Irrigation Technology, or a related field, and a Certified Irrigation Technician Level 2 (IIABC) or equivalent certification. A minimum of 5 years of experience in sports field and/or golf course turf grass maintenance, as well as irrigation system design, installation, operation, and maintenance, will also be essential. A valid Class 5 driver's license is required.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • BC Pesticide Applicator’s License (Landscape)
  • Landscape Horticulturist Level 4 or equivalent training
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and GIS applications
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience operating turf and irrigation equipment
  • Experience with snow removal and other seasonal tasks for winter
  • Familiarity with WHMIS and WCB First Aid Level I
