About the Opportunity

The City of Fort St John is looking for a full-time City/Urban Planner I to join their team in Fort St John, British Columbia. This is an in-office position.

Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing of Development Area Permits, Temporary Use Permits, Development Variance Permits, Subdivisions, and amendments to the Zoning Bylaw and Official Community Plan  
  • Responding to public inquiries, providing technical analysis and preparing reports for Council
  • Interpreting and applying legislation, bylaws, regulations and other enactments, assisting with drafting bylaws, permits, agreements and other documents, coordinating and attending public information meetings and public hearings 
  • Providing support to the Planning Manager on new and existing planning policy projects including Neighbourhood Plans, Growth Strategies and inter-municipal and regional planning projects
  • Supporting the Planning Technologist in the writing and maintenance of application guide packages, application forms and related materials

About You

To qualify, you must have a Degree or Diploma in Planning, Human Geography, or a related field, as well as 2+ years of technical experience in planning or a related field. You must also be eligible to register for membership with the Canadian Planning Institute.

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Have a valid BC Class 5 Drivers' License or be eligible for one
  • Experience in engagement principles and practices and/or Certification in IAP2
  • Ability to interact verbally and in writing with the public and internal and external contacts, in a tactful, clear, concise and appropriate manner
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant provincial legislation and municipal bylaws and policies
  • Knowledge of planning and development processes and current trends
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills

Municipal experience would be considered an asset.
